It usually shows up on a Tuesday. An email from your biggest customer. Polite, friendly, with an attachment. The attachment has tabs. The tabs have words like Scope 3, CO2e, GHG Protocol, ISO 14064, CSRD, CBAM.
And you think: I make parts. I move freight. I don't do this.
Is it too complicated? Fair enough. Let's simplify, shall we?
The whole idea, in one metaphor
Let's say carbon emissions are our negative points to nature. We use our cars and "bam", -5 points to the atmosphere. We cook on the stove, we charge our phones, we get the heat up (or down, in recent summers). It mostly comes down to energy. Whenever we use fossil fuels, directly or indirectly, we unintentionally cause harm to nature.
And it's not only fossil fuels. We burn things, we cut down trees, we cause fugitive emissions (that one deserves its own article). Different sources, same scoreboard: if we release something into the atmosphere, we can count it as carbon emissions.
That's the concept. Everything else is bookkeeping. All those acronyms in the spreadsheet are just agreed rules for counting the same points the same way, so that your number and a Portuguese supplier's number actually mean something side by side. A scoring rulebook, not a philosophy.
"We're small. Does it even matter?"
I'm just one person; how can I create such a significant impact? Short answer: you can't. But in a bigger perspective, even -1 point becomes millions in a city and tens of millions in the hands of a country.
Companies work the same way. One van is a rounding error, a fleet is a number, and a sector is a line in a report somebody in Brussels actually reads. Your emissions look tiny on your own invoice and land on your customer's balance sheet, because your product carries its points with it when it leaves the gate. That, by the way, is why the email came from your customer and not from a regulator.
So are we all to blame? Are we responsible for every negative thing that happens to the world? Let's not be too hard on ourselves. We're trying to spotlight and solve a problem, not blame someone. Remember, solving a problem always starts with defining the problem itself.
Where your points are actually hiding
Three places. Forget the labels for a second.
Things you burn. Gas for heat, diesel in your own trucks, whatever feeds the furnace. On your site, on your meter, under your nose.
Energy you buy. Mostly electricity. You didn't burn anything — somebody burned it on your behalf, somewhere else, and sent you the useful part.
Everything else you touch. The steel, the resin, the packaging, the freight you booked, the pallets, the waste, the flights, the product out there doing its job at the customer. For a manufacturer or a logistics company, this is usually the monster in the room. Naturally, it's the one everyone opens last.
Congratulations — that was Scope 1, 2, and 3. The part of the spreadsheet that made you nervous.
Why now, though?
Not ideology. Demand.
Your big customers have to report their own supply chain, so they're asking you.
Tender questions that used to be a nice-to-have now carry scoring weight.
Banks and insurers ask, in their own quiet way.
If steel, aluminium or cement crosses the EU border to reach you, CBAM has already put a price tag on the answer.
Here's the part worth noticing. The companies that get hurt in all this are rarely the dirty ones. They're the ones who can't answer. "We don't know" is the expensive answer.
Measuring is not committing
If you take one thing from all this, take this one. Running a calculation doesn't sign you up for anything — not a target, not a reduction plan, not a budget, an audit, a certificate, or a glossy report with a leaf on the cover. Those are separate decisions, and you get to make them later, with actual numbers instead of a bad feeling.
A first calculation does exactly one job: it tells you where you stand.
It's usually less awful than the dread about it, and it tends to surprise people. They brace for the factory and find the freight. Or the raw material. Or one product line quietly out-emitting everything else in the building.
You can't manage a number you've never looked at. So look. That's the first step — not a strategy, just a count.
